Hartshill Yard, Nuneaton
Heritage Statement for Canal & River Trust
Hartshill Yard is a former canal maintenance yard and is located between Nuneaton and Atherstone in a rural location. The site is prominently located on the canal and of considerable significance in canal heritage terms, due to its long-standing historical role as a canal maintenance yard, and the survival of several designated assets and associated canal features. The site is owned by Canal and River Trust, and a heritage statement was required to support a planning application for alterations to the site access and improvements to the public realm creating car parking for office staff and visitors at Hartshill Yard, located adjacent to the south-west bank of the Coventry Canal. The site dates back to 1789, and the Coventry Canal is one of the first stretches of canal to have been constructed in England pioneered by engineer James Brindley.
